In the latest ranking of the world's finest dining establishments, José Avillez's Belcanto has been honored as the 31st-best restaurant globally, while Spain's Disfrutar claims the prestigious top spot. Nestled in the heart of Barcelona, Disfrutar has been anointed as the premier dining destination in the "50 Best Restaurants in the World" list, with Portugal's Belcanto transitioning from 25th to 31st place.
At the 22nd edition of these illustrious awards, hosted on Wednesday in Los Angeles, Spain's Asador Etxebarri (Atxondo - Basque Country) ascended to second place, a remarkable rise from its fourth-place position last year.
Previously, José Avillez's Belcanto in Lisbon made a significant leap of 21 spots to secure 25th place among the world's top 50 restaurants. With two Michelin stars, Belcanto is celebrated for its "excellent cuisine, worth the detour." It was ranked 46th in the 2022 edition. This exceptional restaurant first entered the top 50 in 2019 at 42nd place, maintaining its standing in 2021 (the list was not published in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
Belcanto stands as Portugal's sole representative in the top 50 list and the extended list of the world's finest restaurants, ranking from 51st to 100th. This year’s ranking showcases new culinary stars, with Spain’s Disfrutar, led by chefs Mateus Casañas, Oriol Castro, and Eduard Xatruch, taking the crown. It displaces the Peruvian restaurant Central, run by Virgilio Martinez and Pía León, which achieved the pinnacle after a decade on the podium.
About Belcanto
Since 2012, José Avillez has been enchanting diners at Belcanto with his innovative and artistic culinary creations. Within just a year, the restaurant earned its first Michelin star, with a second following in the 2014 Guide, establishing Belcanto as Lisbon's first two-star restaurant. In early 2019, Belcanto relocated to a new, adjacent space near Largo de São Carlos, enhancing its prestigious setting.
Chef José Avillez’s menu at Belcanto “recreates, reinvents, and elevates the traditions of Portuguese cuisine,” presented in a sophisticated decorated space that blends the romanticism of old Chiado with futuristic elegance. While the price may be a consideration for some, the unparalleled dining experience promises to exceed expectations.
The restaurant is elegantly divided into three rooms: the main dining room and the exclusive Chef's Table. In any of these luxurious settings, guests can indulge in one of two exquisite tasting menus. To book this extraordinary culinary, talk to us.
