Portugal, the preferred destination of luxury travelers
05.03.2024
Portugal is one of the places that has been on the tourism radar and appears year after year as one of the world's favorite destinations for high-end travelers according to a study on luxury vacation habits conducted by Condé Nast Johansens. It is the eighth favorite destination, just behind the US (in 6th place) and the Caribbean (in 7th place). Long stays or weekend getaways were preferred by luxury travelers who chose, in order of preference, vacation periods of 14, 10, and 7 nights. When deciding on one destination or another, luxury travelers are very clear about their three priorities before making a reservation. The vacation destination being fully refundable in case of last-minute cancellation and flexibility in booking and changing stays are the main factors mentioned, followed, as before the pandemic, by service excellence, gastronomy, and wines. The country remains in the sights of investors, who continue to find it attractive, and resilience remains the watchword in a scenario that tends to be post-pandemic.
And who is looking for luxury and real-estate investments, which destinations should not be missed?
Comporta
ideal for those seeking a real estate destination and a mix of countryside and beach
Francisco Nogueira | Architects: Fragmentos | Comporta 10 residence
Comporta, located in the Setubal area, is one of the most sought-after destinations for luxury investment, with 80% of buyers being foreigners. This area of Portugal is known for its deserted beaches, picturesque villages, and its acceptable cost of living. The advantages associated with the granting of Gold Visas, together with the characteristics of this Portuguese paradise, make Comporta one of the most desirable destinations for foreigners.
The average price of a property in this Setúbal locality reaches 2 million Euros and foreigners occupy 80% of the buyers' share. Comporta is currently one of the vacation destinations of choice for several Portuguese, making this an excellent area for investment.
One of the hottest coastlines in Europe today also has one of the best hotels in the country, the Sublime Comporta. The destination is the perfect balance of desirable places around the world, blending characteristics from several of them. Some say it is the "new St. Tropez". There are those who make comparisons (much more moderate) with the hustle and bustle of Ibiza.

Lisboa
The populated, fashionable, cultural, and historical city that steals your heart in every corner
Lisbon is so fashionable that it has to decide if luxury offerings win the duel with tradition, if restaurants, hotels, shopping, and nightlife show themselves as photocopies of what the visitor finds out there or if they present themselves as rare, unique, and unparalleled. The choice of the capital city is to guarantee the guest the superior services to which he is accustomed and, at the same time, to ensure that Lisbon and its surroundings are an adventure that calls for a 'refill'. There is adjacent fame: the visitor assumes that Lisbon and its surroundings are by comparison cheaper than other cosmopolitan cities or tourist resorts to match. It is the nature of Lisbon to be prepared for anything: five-star hotels in iconic buildings, luxury stores, restaurants majestic in décor and cuisine, and places of unparalleled grandeur and romance.
Paris, Milan, and New York have reasons to fear Lisbon's competition in the luxury market. From Rua Castilho to Avenida da Liberdade, there is no foreign luxury that has no major brands or Portuguese answer to rivals here. Our capital city stretches along the waterline, delivering the Tagus River to the Atlantic Ocean between Oeiras, Cascais, and Sintra, following the rules of a new concept of luxury. The one that used to be associated with the classic and unattainable understood that the new globalizing winds took by the hand a high-quality life to the ground of good taste, of a 'trendy' lifestyle whose icon can be as pompous as it is minimal. Luxury is no longer ostentatious: it remains scarce and for rare purses, but it is joined by a sense of what is good and recommended, and the discreet sophistication of it all. And Lisbon and its surroundings have all this in place.
Belcanto, nº42 Best restaurant in the world
The Lisbon of luxury has unavoidable assets, such as the wealth of its heritage. Museums of various arts and crafts, first-class gastronomy, getaways where everything that is good is concentrated (the Belém of museums and custard tarts), where everything that counts is spread (the typical neighborhoods of the capital), the cyclical festivities, the sands of Cascais, the mysteries of the roads of Sintra. Portugal never tires of having so many must-see places that, even if made for everyone, know how to treat luxury by name.
Lisbon is one of the best destinations in Portugal for those who want to book a luxury hotel. The accommodations available in the city are incredible, offering good views, great facilities, and full amenities. For those looking for real estate deals in Portugal, these Luxury neighborhoods in Portugal - or luxury parishes in Portugal: Estrela (Estrela is one of the new parishes of Lisbon and comprises the former parishes of Lapa, Santos-o-Velho, and Prazeres. It is located west of the Historic Center of Lisbon, next to Alfama and Praça do Comércio. It is a very well-located area, with an incredible view of the Tagus River, museums, and the Jardim da Estrela. The borough, which is among the upscale neighborhoods in Portugal, is a reference in digital innovation and has several apps that help keep it clean and give residents a voice).
Belém, Cascais, Carvalhal, and Estoril, are the areas in Lisbon where housing is most expensive, sought after, and desired.
Algarve
Algarve is the best beach destination in Europe.
The Algarve is one of the best-known tourist spots in the country. And, because of this, the luxury offer is extensive. Here, the offer extends. Considered one of the 7 wonders of Portugal, the Algarve has invested in luxury tourism, in the form of experiences absorbing the best that this piece of land, at the confluence of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, has to give and show. By the way, it is the only region in the country with two restaurants with two Michelin stars: Vila Joya, in Albufeira, and Ocean, in Porches, Lagoa.
Each bite is an explosion of flavors and textures, a toast for the eyes and stomach, with the special touch that only a chef who knows the potential of each product can give. That's how you can describe the experience at Ocean, one of several restaurants in the five-star Vila Vita Parc resort, perched atop a cliff overlooking the sea and boasting a 21-hectare garden.
Porto
tradition meets luxury
Get ready for a place that will give you everything you are entitled to. Good views, culture, gastronomy, history, and architecture. More recently, the center of the city has been blessed with the reconstruction of Avenida dos Aliados, which is establishing itself as the privileged axis for the installation of luxury retail in the city of Porto, will have five new stores to host brands in this segment. The spaces are part of Aliados 9, one of the projects to be born in this avenue. The consultancy firm JLL is marketing these spaces on an exclusive basis, under a mandate given by the owner of the building.
For investments
Foz and Nevogilde, Aldoar and Miragaia, Vitória, São Nicolau, and Sé, are the parishes in Porto where housing is more expensive, sought after, and desired.
